GETTING REAL is a great informative book about anything and every thing that happens to young people when they grow up. It’s all about teens, their problems, and how to help them fix them. It has great informative articles about those things that you never get told, and it covers everything from depression to being spiritual and finding your inner self. It’s straight to the point, about everything that’s important to a teenager. It would be appealing to teenagers, youth workers or parents who just want to know what’s going on inside their teenager’s minds. This book has real stories from real people.

Think about buying this book of advice for teenagers and parents. It's a book to dip into, to get absorbed in, to talk about identity, mind, body, gender, love, relationships, and sexuality; abuse and addiction; suicide; the spiritual journey… Amrita offers practical techniques for some of the hard stuff; for instance, how to forgive. You don’t need to have children to need this book, as an adolescent is probably alive and kicking within you. Parents and teachers often feel awkward about some of these topics so important for adolescents, but you need to get real. It is challenging! Grow up! Read it!

From Tabatha, ASCA (Adult Survivors of Child Abuse) Newsletter
GETTING REAL... about growing up! by Amrita Hobbs is a self-published, large format, easy to read colourful book with lots of pictures. It is written for teens and young adults but also helpful for parents and adults with unresolved childhood or adolescent experiences.

The author, a survivor of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, is a teacher who runs workshops and Rites of Passage camps for young people and adults in Australia. I usually find it challenging to get through reading a whole book but devoured this one in one weekend. Each chapter is interspersed with Amrita's personal story, practical exercises to process issues, TeenSpeak, (young peoples opinions on a topic), information and ideas. Issues covered include sense of self, depression, friendship, rites of passage, feelings, the body, eating disorders, the mind, choosing our thoughts, school, stress, family, separation & divorce, death, dysfunction, love, sex, boundaries, sexual preference, abuse, addiction, suicide, spiritual journey and change.

It is written lovingly and thoughtfully with an aim of healing and creating a better world. I would recommend it to everyone and as a reference book in the library of every family.

GETTING REAL... about growing up! is generous, passionate and full of integrity. It is sensitive and honest and is an invaluable resource for young people, parents, teachers, youth workers and mentors. It assists in untangling the intricate and often confusing weave of what it is to be an adolescent today.

GETTING REAL... about growing up! communicates compellingly to young people who may be struggling to make sense of their rapidly changing worlds - both inside and outside. This book can help them make sense of their Journey. It spins a fine net of truth and story to catch the young ones who might otherwise slip through.

The frequent inclusions of TEENSPEAK, stories and quotes provide real life connections that are both engaging and informative. These contributions from young people add realism and make the book relevant to a wide cross- section of the community. A refreshing addition to the adolescent development field this terrific book offers one of the most comprehensive explorations of major life issues confronting adolescents in our fast forward society. It hits the nail on the head and is written in a language that teenagers can relate to and understand. This is real information to guide youth through an incredibly important time in their life. It helps them to find their path and bridges the gap between where they have been and where they are going.

GETTING REAL... about growing up! can provide young people with the foundation on which to base their sense of self - a place for them to consider and explore their innermost feelings - to find their ideas and ideals in an inspiring and practical way. They are given not only facts but also the mythical and spiritual resonances that allow them to truly connect to their real selves. It is sure to help many, many young people find their own truth and give them the courage to live it. User-friendly, it is easy to read and contains many practical suggestions about how adolescents can explore important issues - body changes, peer pressure, drugs, suicide, sexuality, feelings, the future of the planet, spirituality, identity, abuse, choices, responsibility, freedom, parents and family.

It provides young people with a wealth of information and activities for exploring their identities, connecting with themselves, their peers and their communities. The reader is treated as intelligent and capable of making good choices.

It is one of the most positive pieces of writing for young people available - they are encouraged to make conscious choices for their own future and the book shows them a way forward. It gives them skills to optimise their talents and gifts, to recognise their potential and to be strong enough to make a change. Each page encourages them to be who they really are and to fly!!!

This amazing book also speaks in an uncanny way to the teenager inside every adult. It provides a delicate combination of ancient wisdom and up to date information and is sure to assist anyone seeking change.
