TEENAGE
PROBLEMS :: OR PROBLEM TEENAGERS
Generally
teenagers are not the problem. They are working out how to
work with life's problems. When they are behaving unacceptably
or being destructive in their environment, be careful not
to immediately assume they are the problem. Their actions
may be the symptoms of problems within the family or society,
rather than the problem itself. They are acting out their
discontent. They are not always given the kind of support,
direction and guidance they could benefit from.

Nothing
makes up for failure in the family. Sam Keen, a workshop leader
and author of many successful books read the message above
on a billboard one-day. ÒAfter considerable meditation on
the matter, I have come to believe that the message on the
billboard is both true and prophetic. In watching my children
struggle with the hurts and dis-continuities that are the
inevitable result of irreconcilable differences between their
parents, I have learned what many men learn only after divorce
Ð there is nothing more precious than our children. In the
quiet hours of the night when I add up the accomplishments
of my life Ð I know the three that rank above all the others
are named Lael, Gifford and Jessamyn. In the degree to which
I have loved, nurtured and enjoyed them, I honour myself.
In the degree to which I have injured them by being unavailable
to them because of my obsessive preoccupations with myself
or my profession, I have failed as a father and as a man.
FIRE IN THE BELLY, Sam Keen
